It’s the Third Thursday and Jonny Mojo can’t make it for Band Beyond Description, so instead we present a very special treat. For all of us who love Jerry Garcia, Live at Keystone was a seminal recording from which we still draw inspiration. His collaboration with keyboardist Merl Saunders bore copious volumes of delicious fruit over the years and none more impactful than this. The songs from that era – “The Harder They Come,” “Keepers,” “My Funny Valentine,” they are timeless pieces of genius that are still ripe to have new life breathed in.
Merl’s son Tony Saunders – a tremendous bassist in his own rite – has been carrying on his father’s legacy with the project Keystone Revisited. The current incarnation of the band is more exciting than ever with our favorite Dead-conjuring keyboardist Scott Guberman elevating everything he touches. The brilliant psychedelic stylings of Matt Salata (Candelaria, Totally Dead) on guitar take Jerry’s lead and explore even further. Funky drummer Bradley Leach gives this music the swing that has always defined it. Merl and Jerry will surely be looking down with big smiles as the Crazy Horse is transformed into the Keystone for the night.
