Band Beyond Description

Thursday, July 18 / 9:30 pm-12:30 am

/ $20

If the Grateful Dead is your religion, then the Crazy Horse is your church when Third Thursday rolls around. Every July, our regular bandleader, Jonny Mojo, has to take the month off to perform at the Redwood Ramble. In his place, we are very excited to have the incredibly talented Pete Sawyer. One of the Bay Area’s most well-respected Dead specialists, he is known for his work with the Left-Hand Monkey Wrench Gang and Brightshine. Pete is a magician on the guitar with a deep connection to the soul of this music.

Our other regular host, Gary Campus (Deadbeats), will be carrying the rhythmic torch as usual. Gary emanates pure joy in every beat and gracefully molds his style to elevate the strengths of his collaborators. He’s been a rhythmic instigator in the region for 45 years now and is as passionate as ever. Great things always happen when he has the cerebral bass buddha, Murph Murphy, alongside. This regular Stu Allen collaborator is one of the most tapped in musicians we know. Just like Phil, he keeps things relentlessly groovy and unravels fresh ideas around every curve.

Oh yeah….Maybe we should tell you that Scott Guberman is here on keys. That is always a reason for celebration! This former Phil Lesh collaborator is widely regarded as one of the pre-eminent GD keyboard wizards in the country. (He’s also a touring member of Pink Floyd tribute band, The Gilmore Project) He makes everything sparkle as he unleashes pure, psychedelic creativity in every note. Brent is his guy, so the band won’t resist the opportunity to do a classic Brent-era show played on this very date in the Indiana cornfields.

Last but not least, our man Justin Purtill completes the lineup on guitar. Also a frequent Stu Allen collaborator, Justin is a relentless innovator, a tonal master and a sorcerer of clever phrasing. His liquid crystal lines will provide beautiful counterpoints for Pete’s leads. A heavily jazz-influenced player and a Berklee grad, Justin is no Bobby, but he does have a lot in common with McCoy Tyner. We can’t wait to see what this atypical Band Beyond is going to conjure!
