The Geezer Gig
Friday, November 8 / 5:00 pm-8:00 pm
/ Free
Over fifteen years running and still going strong, this “Second Friday Tradition” is as reliable as the tides. You definitely don’t have to be a geezer to appreciate this community pow wow. Bob Woods is the most eminently tasteful guitarist in the foothills. The lifelong railroad man is too good to be this humble, while firmly planted behind the wheel of the locomotive. Doubling as a member of ZZ Top, drummer Skip Alan Smith relishes his role in powering the steam engine of the groove. Retro-cool bassist, Brett Cole (Earles of Newtown), anchors the low end with style. Dynamic songstress and perpetual smiler – Juliette Gobert – makes the vibe extra sweet with her timeless charm, high-lonesome vocals and admirable guitar chops.
This lineup would be more than enough on its own, but the addition of guest musicians always amplifies the experience. Earle Ford (Earles of Newtown) transports the audience to the speakeasy back-alleys of New Orleans with his trumpet. Phil Kember’s innovative trombone stylings add exciting nuances to the multi-layered expression of sound.
The Crazy Horse feels completely insulated from the outside world while Bob and the gang dish out a soulful mix of classic rock, blues, Americana, surf and swing. The camaraderie of the crowd and pervasive sense of joy is always a beautiful thing to behold. There’s at least one thing in common with every Geezer Gig: you walk out with a skip in your step, feeling better than when you came in.
